Kedi Kopi’s menu centres around classic Malaysian breakfast dishes, with a few Western-style foods thrown in for good measure. A local favourite is the dry curry noodles with a tangy, spicy marinade designed to satisfy, though everything on the menu is a winner.

If you feel like something lighter, the kaya-butter toast with soft-boiled eggs goes really well with the famous Ipoh white coffee. Other classics include sesame buns and iced cham (a delicious mix of tea and coffee).

Restaurant Moon De Moon

Restaurant Moon de Moon is something of an Ipoh breakfast institution, and for a good reason! If you walk past this café, there is always a long line of patrons waiting to get their hands on some of their famous dishes.

For this reason, it’s a good idea to get to Moon de Moon early to avoid the rush. However, even if you arrive at opening time, you may be waiting around 20 minutes for your food, so make sure to factor that into your day. On public holidays and weekends, it can take almost an hour for food to be ready – don’t come here if you’re in a rush!

The café is most well-known for its kai si hor fun (shredded chicken noodle soup), though other favourites include the hock chew (fish balls) and fu pei (fried bean curd skin). Wash it down with some Milo or iced cham for a perfect start to your day.

You might have noticed that most Ipoh breakfast places serve dry curry noodles as part of their menu – Kedai Kopi Keng Nam is no exception! This café is only open for breakfast and brunch but is constantly inundated with customers no matter the day of the week.

One thing that needs to be said about Kedai Kopi Keng Nam is the service – while this café is trendy, it’s essential to arrive at the right time to avoid stressed-out staff.

Our picks on the menu include the dry curry noodles (of course), as well as the sweet yam cakes and pulut kaya (sticky rice with kaya). You can also get iced white coffee here, which is the perfect caffeine hit on a hot day. So eat in, or get your meal takeaway if you’re in a rush.

Aud’s by JJ Café

More based in Western cuisine, Aud’s by JJ is the perfect place for anyone who just feels like a hearty meal from home. Known for its eggs Benedict, this little café might not attract many visitors from its exterior, but don’t let the humble outside fool you into giving it a miss.

Aud’s has some of the most unique breakfast beverage options for thirsty patrons. Make sure to try the avocado smoothies for a thick, satisfying morning drink, or iced espresso for something with a little more kick! They also have some great burgers for anyone who wants a solid start to their day – keep an eye out for the pulled pork option.

Many of the sweets here are based on traditional French techniques and are flaky and delicious. Croissants of various flavours are available year-round and feature everything from fresh fruit to ham and chilli.

Girlie’s rotates their cake flavours depending on the seasonal availability of the fresh produce, and are unlike anything you’ve ever tried. Try the strawberry and mint cheesecake or watermelon jelly cakes for a uniquely Malaysian dessert experience. You can also pick up their dishes on Foodpanda if you don’t feel like leaving your accommodation that day – however, we recommend visiting this Ipoh breakfast institution!
